Swastika/Jim Crow film, talk

“From Swastika to Jim Crow.” Joyce Mallory of the Nonprofit Center of Milwaukee will discuss her experiences with sociology Professor Ernst Borinski, a German Jew who immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1938. He helped undermine Jim Crow laws in Mississippi. Dr. Fran Kaplan, who recently retired from America’s Black Holocaust Museum, will facilitate a talkback. Holocaust in Greece film

Part of “An Untold Tale: The Holocaust in Greece,” a three-month series. On Feb. 7, 7 p.m., free, at Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 2160 Wauwatosa Ave., Milwaukee, watch the film “Cloudy Sunday,” a Greek drama set in 1942 Salonika about the forbidden love between a young Jewish girl and a Christian boy who are members of the resistance. The film depicts the destruction of the Sephardic Jewish community of Salonika. Film, talkback: ‘The Hitchhikers’

Israeli filmmakers Yair Agmon and Elad Schwartz will present their latest web series, “The Hitchhikers,” which breaks stigmas and displays the diversity of Israeli society. They will talk about their experience while crisscrossing the country offering a lift to everyone they meet. Hear how this experience changed their perspective on Israeli society. Hearing loss/disability program

In recognition of Jewish Disability Month, Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun is sponsoring a program Feb. 11, at 1 p.m., “Danger! Untreated Hearing Loss! We hear with our brain, not just our ears.” Presenters Eloise Schwarz and Elizabeth Ermenc are both Hearing Loss Association of America leaders for the local chapter. Both have hearing loss. Choral workshop and concert

Zemer Am, a Midwest gathering of Jewish choruses, will hold its annual day-long workshop and culminating afternoon concert in Milwaukee for the first time. Previously, the event took place at Chicago-area synagogues. Chorus members spend the day learning and rehearsing songs to sing in common at the concert and in smaller group rehearsals. The Milwaukee Jewish Community Chorale (MilwaukeeJewishCommunityChorale.org) is a key organizer. Three Chicago choral groups and two Milwaukee groups are slated to perform. The Feb. 18, 4 p.m. concert at Congregation Shalom, 7630 N. Santa Monica Blvd., is free and open to the public. Contextualizing talk and screening of the film, “City Within a City: Pretty Soon Runs Out.” This 1968 documentary explores stories of low-income Milwaukeeans impacted by urban renewal development. Panel discussion looks at segregation in Milwaukee, analysis of the current status, and discussion of where we go from here. Marc Levine from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Center for Economic Development will address growth of entrenched segregation and racial inequality in Milwaukee since the 1970s; Margaret Rozga will review her activism during and after the open housing marches with late husband Father James Groppi; Bill Tisdale, president and CEO of the Milwaukee Fair Housing Council, will discuss the organization’s role. Art & Justice Bus Tour

Dominic Inouye, educator, artist and founder of ZipMKE, will lead a bus tour exploring Milwaukee’s historic Civil Rights sites, including the James E. Groppi Unity Bridge, the Bronzeville Loop, neighborhoods shared by African American and Jewish communities, and public artworks recognizing local and international social justice leaders. Freedom Seder

“African American Jewish Freedom Seder.” April 29, 4-6 p.m. Members of Milwaukee’s black and Jewish communities will share a Freedom Passover Seder to explore common ground and the universal pursuit of freedom. In what has become a bridging tradition in cities across the nation, intergroup Seders bring together African Americans and Jews to share this ritual meal to discuss and celebrate the shared values of justice and liberation both culture groups find in the Exodus story. In breaking bread together (or matzo in this case) and engaging in meaningful dialogue, a strengthening of communal understanding and respect can be fostered and celebrated. Alcoholics Anonymous

An international fellowship of men and women who have had a drinking problem. Breast cancer support

Breast cancer patients, their families and friends are matched with professionally trained breast cancer survivors and co-survivors. All connections are personalized and based on similar diagnoses, treatment plans and circumstances. Services are free and begin with a phone conversation. ABCD: After Breast Cancer Diagnosis supports both patients and survivors. Friendship House Fellowship

A support group for Jewish men and women in recovery from addiction to alcohol or other substances. Requirements for membership are participation in a 12-step program (such as AA or Narcotics Anonymous) and a desire to recover. Meetings are Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. at The Shul, 3901 N. Lake Drive in Milwaukee.
