Edwin Goldman

Edwin Goldman of Glendale, a U.S. Army veteran who was active in the Jewish community, died Oct. 6, 2016. He was 88.

Born Dec. 9, 1927 in Milwaukee, he attended North Division High School and University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. He was a CPA and deputy director of the Treasurer’s Office for the City of Milwaukee.

Goldman was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Board of Directors of the Milwaukee Municipal Credit Union.

He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army. He was an active member of multiple Jewish and civic organizations, having served as president of Gilead Lodge of B’nai Brith. He was an active member of the Jewish War Veterans, the Milwaukee Woodworkers’ Guild, the City of Milwaukee Retirees and Toastmasters International. He was a member of Congregation Shalom. He was an avid genealogist and remained very active during his retirement by taking classes in cabinet making, clock making and repair, calligraphy, memoir writing and oil painting, to name a few.

Beloved husband of Sally (nee Bernstein) for 68 years. Cherished father of Diane (Richard) Kane, Philip (Renae) Goldman, Karen (Fred) Meyerson.  Loving grandfather of Ryan and Adam Kane, Natalie and Joseph Goldman, and Jennifer (Thomas) Knowlton.  Further survived by his sister-in-law Harriet Goldman, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Theodore and Sandy Bernstein and others.

As requested, a private interment at the Spring Hill Mausoleum was held. Goodman-Bensman was the funeral home. Rabbi Noah Chertkoff conducted services.

Miriam Kahn

Miriam (nee Katz) Kahn, a loving mother and grandmother, died Sept. 10, 2016. She was 95.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, Joseph G. Kahn.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Miriam Kahn served in the Women’s Army Air Corps. Miriam was active in many Milwaukee area organizations, including Anshai Lebowitz Sisterhood, Beth El Ner Tamid Sisterhood, Congregation Beth Israel Sisterhood and the Jewish War Veterans. A trip to Israel introduced her to the work of the General Israel Orphans’ Home for Girls Jerusalem, which she tirelessly supported over many decades.

Miriam was the proud and loving mother of Lawrence (Bobbi) Kahn of Fox Point, Linda (Richard) Silberman of Glendale and Dennis (Aimee) Kahn of Mequon.  In addition, she nurtured and adored seven grandchildren and later their spouses. She is further survived by sister-in-law Rosalie (the late Gerald Kahn) Kahn and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Sept. 13, 2016, at Congregation Beth Israel Ner Tamid, Glendale. Memorial contributions made to Congregation Beth Israel Ner Tamid or the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center are appreciated.

Sylvia Sushman

Sylvia Sushman, a nurse who helped found Kibbutz Hatzor in the years preceding Israeli independence, died Sept. 17, 2016. She was 96. She was born in Baltimore.  In her youth she was a member of Hashomer Hatzair, the early Zionist youth movement.

Her first career was as a kindergarten teacher.  In her fifties she returned to college and became an LPN and then a RN. She worked for Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County in Willingboro, New Jersey.

She was a member of Hadassah and the National Council of Jewish Women. She loved classical music, especially opera and enjoyed bird watching. Her husband Benjamin died in 2002. She moved to Milwaukee in 2011. Survivors are Israel Sushman (Nancy Sushman), Miriam Sushman (Owen Goldin) and Reuben Sushman. Jonah Sushman, Sylvia’s son, died in 2012.

Burial at Beit Hamedrosh Hagodel was Sept. 21, 2016 with Rabbi Levi Emmer.  Memorials are welcome to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, Illinois 60601. 312-335-8700.
