Purim event thrills Lake Park congregants

For Purim, some saved Milwaukee from disaster while others socialized, all of it taking place at a trendy Third Ward spot.

Congregants of Lake Park Synagogue held their Purim gathering with cheese and crackers among a grouping of art galleries, with some taking time out to solve mysteries in a secret room that was just an elevator ride away at “Save Milwaukee,” a local entertainment business.

It all happened at the Marshall Building, 207 E. Buffalo St. On one floor, congregants worked to unravel a mystery, to save Milwaukee from doom. Elsewhere in the same building, sandwiches, cheese, crackers, hamentashen and conversation were all available. About 30 people attended the event in late March.

“It was inspiring and frustrating,” said Ellis Avner of Milwaukee, smiling over the difficulty of the Save Milwaukee game. “I had a lot of fun,” said Ken Kapp of Shorewood.

“The Purim event was fantastic. Many more people came than we anticipated and everyone had a good time,” said Rabbi Nisan Andrews of Lake Park Synagogue, 3207 N. Hackett Ave. in Milwaukee. “The food was good, the art was great and the comraderie was fabulous.”

Andrews has been rabbi at the synagogue for nearly two years, which he describes as a “warm, inviting place for people of any background.”

Regardless of the level of personal observance, people can feel comfortable at his synagogue, he said, adding that members take active leadership roles in many community institutions. The synagogue is in the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee area.

The synagogue’s annual dinner, slated for Thursday, June 16, will be feature David Luchins as guest speaker. Luchins is a former political science department chair and once served as a senior advisor to the late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, a Democrat of New York.
