Two local teachers are being named Jewish Educator of the Year, one a “master teacher” at Milwaukee Jewish Day School and Congregation Shalom and the other a valued teacher at Hillel Academy.
The Jewish Home and Care Center, 1400 N. Prospect Ave., will host the Salute to Jewish Educators on March 6 at 3:30 p.m., giving out awards for Jewish Educator of the Year along with other accolades.
“Our community is blessed with superb Jewish educators and (the Coalition for Jewish Learning) wishes to highlight their contributions and thereby elevate the status of Jewish educators in Milwaukee,” said Tziporah Altman-Shafer, director of the Coalition for Jewish Learning, the education department of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation. A committee representing a cross-section of the community chooses the winners.
This year, the Coalition is naming two teachers Jewish Educator of the Year:
Susie Rosengarten is a teacher at Milwaukee Jewish Day School and Congregation Shalom, and director of Judaic programming for the Steve & Shari Sadek Family Camp Interlaken JCC. She is a master teacher, loves Jewish tradition and is passionate about it and transmits that passion to her students, according to her nomination papers. She recently traveled to Poland on what was a very grueling but rewarding trip, so she could learn firsthand the results of World War II and share that with her students, according to the nomination.
Mishy Pittlemanis ateacher at Hillel Academy. Her nominator writes, “For thirty years ‘Morah Mishy’ has had a profound impact on the lives of her students. Working with the youngest students at Hillel Academy, she becomes a friend, mother-away-from-home and a teacher for every student in her class. She has a unique way of personally connecting with each student, and valuing their individuality.”
Jody Lansing of Milwaukee Jewish Day School and Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun will receive the Rabbi Emanuel & Deborah LifshutzAward for a mitzvah project that had her third-grade class raise more than $2,000 last year for Katy’s Kloset, an organization that provides wheelchairs and other medical equipment to people in need.
The Gill Incentive for Teachers is an award designed to stimulate and encourage teachers to translate their unique educational ideas and initiatives into effective classroom projects. Five teachers from Yeshiva Elementary School – Gilah Saltzman, Ahuva Jarcaig, Karen Torem, Miriam Liff, and Rabbi Hersh Hiller – will receive this award for a K-8 school-wide program to teach good character traits.
Devorah Shmotkin will receive the same award on behalf of all the teachers at Hillel Academy for a K-8 school-wide Torah Fair.
