Enter the Holocaust Essay Contest for a chance at a trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
The topic should be: has learning about the Holocaust influenced the way you act, the way you look at the world and/or the way you treat others? In your answer use specific examples about events, groups, people and/or survivors from the Holocaust. Suggested resources are the websites of Yad Vashem, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and i Witness (USC Shoah Foundation).
The essay should not exceed 1,200 words. It is open to all students in grades 7-9 (division I) and in grades 10-12 (division II). Entries must be postmarked no later than March 9, 2016. No entries will be accepted after 4 p.m. on this date. The two winners in each division will be announced and presented on May 1, 2016 at the Day of Remembrance (Yom Hashoah) Commemoration, 3 p.m., at the JCC in Whitefish Bay.
Each entry must represent the independent research and writing of the student; must be 1,200 words or less; will be judged on originality, content, and quality of expression; must be typed, double spaced, on one side of the paper only; remains the property of the JCC, which reserves the right to publish it in its entirety; must be accompanied by a title page. The title page must contain the following information: On title page only — student’s name, student home address, student telephone number, email address, school name, school address, school telephone number, name of teacher if applicable and grade.
The student name or any other identification (such as other family members’ names) should not appear in the essay. The contest will be judged by a committee composed of distinguished educators and community leaders. All participants will be acknowledged.
