$3 million artwork sale to benefit Federation

Shopping is now open for a $3 million art collection, with every piece sold benefitting the Milwaukee Jewish Federation.

The 1,400-piece collection, with pieces typically offered for hundreds or thousands of dollars, features postwar and contemporary art paintings, photography and works on paper.

Much of the art, viewable at HdContemporaryArt.com, features artists with international and national reputations, according to Sam Heaton, director of the HD Contemporary Art private gallery in Palm Springs, California.

Net proceeds from the art, all of it donated by the Audrey and Joseph Bernstein family, are to benefit Milwaukee Jewish Federation through its Jewish Community Foundation.  “It’s not hard to let go of it because I feel that I’m giving it to my community,” said retired Milwaukee attorney Joseph Bernstein, former board chairman of the Foundation.

Foundation executive director Caren Goldberg said in her 19 years with the organization, she’s handled art before, but never on this scale. “It was a really generous gift that will have a significant impact on the community in the future,” Goldberg said.

Joseph Bernstein’s son, Robert Bernstein, helped to secure Heaton’s services to itemize and market the collection.

Heaton noted that art for sale includes:
  • Photos by Leeland Y. Lee, including 1960s architectural photos of iconic Palm Springs homes. “He is a very interesting person in history who is still alive,” Heaton said, adding that the photos “are kind of desert living in its heyday in the 60s. It’s modernism.”
  • Photos by William Wegman, who is known for shots of his weimaraner dogs in various costumes and poses. His work has been exhibited in the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and the Orange County Museum of Art in California.
  • “Moratorium,” painted in 1969 by Jasper Johns. He is famous for his paintings of flags, targets, maps, and numbers and his work is held by Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., among others.
