Prayers for peace in Israel

With violence in Israel on the rise and police building a wall in East Jerusalem, several hundred local people gathered at Congregation Beth Israel Ner Tamid Sunday night, Oct. 18, to pray for peace.

The event, sponsored by Milwaukee Jewish Federation, focused on peace, not on the violence.

“We’re gathered today to stand with Israel for peace,” said Federation President and CEO Hannah Rosenthal. “We stand in solidarity with Israel and the victims, the innocent victims who were just going about their lives when attacked by knives.”

Doron Zehavi of Israel played guitar and Rabbi Jacob Herber, of the congregation at 6880 N. Green Bay Ave., read a psalm.

Carli Shapiro, 17, a Nicolet High School senior, represented BBYO, a Jewish youth organization, and read a prayer for peace.

“In these trying times with Israel, it’s just so important to stand and say I do not condone this violence,” she said, in an interview after the event.
