The Milwaukee Jewish Federation is holding a Peace Vigil For Israel on Sunday, 6:30 p.m. at Congregation Beth Israel Ner Tamid, 6880 N. Green Bay Ave., Glendale.
The event is open to all, held in the wake of a series of attacks in Israel. There have been more than 20 attacks, mostly stabbings, already this month, killing a total of seven Israeli Jews, according to the New York Times.
“We are outraged by the deadly spree of terrorist attacks in Israel and we are gathering to show our solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Israel,” said Federation President/CEO Hannah Rosenthal.
The purpose of the vigil is to stand for peace in the Middle East, she said in an interview with the Chronicle. “The situation can’t be sustained,” she said.
The Federation’s Jewish Community Relations Council issued a statement on Wednesday urging for an end to the violence and terrorism across Israel.
“We appreciate yesterday’s statement from the U.S. Department of State condemning in the strongest terms today’s terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians,” says the statement, signed by Council Director Elana Kahn and Council Board Chair Michael Pollack. “We urge President Barack Obama to support the Israeli government’s security efforts without reservation and ask him to call on the Palestinian Authority to use all possible measures to end this violence now.”
