Two Wisconsin teachers in Holocaust seminar

Scott Lone of West Bend East High School and Chad Quamme of Beloit Memorial High School were among the 25 U.S. educators who participated in this past summer’s annual seminar organized by the Holocaust and Jewish Resistance Teachers’ Program.

According to Lone, the participants were selected from high school teachers who applied from throughout the U.S. The participants needed to have some previous experience teaching about the Holocaust, he said.

Moreover, participants must commit both to teach about the Holocaust in the coming school year and to change the way they will do so.

“I know that certainly will be true for me,” Lone, a history teacher, told The Chronicle in a telephone conversation. “My job is to personalize the Holocaust and the victims so students understand that these were individuals… who never had the opportunity to finish their lives.”

The seminar took place June 30-July 14 in New York City, Germany and Poland, Lone said.

According to its website, this project is sponsored by the American Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors and Their Descendants, the Jewish Labor Committee and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.
