Obituaries for July 2015

Daniel A. Kane

   Former Milwaukeean Daniel A. Kane died May 8 in Fort Lee, N.J., from the effects of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, “Lou Gehrig’s disease.” He was 72.

   He was born in New York City and graduated from Fort Hamilton High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from Baruch College, a Master of Science in hospital administration from Columbia University and a doctorate in public health from the University of Pittsburgh.

   He served many hospitals around the country, including eight years as president and chief executive officer of Mount Sinai Medical Center in Milwaukee, beginning in 1977.

   While in Milwaukee, he was a member of Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun and served on its finance committee.

   He was the former president of several state hospital associations. His personal interests included philanthropy, community welfare and golf. He was recognized for community service by Israel Bonds and the Anti-Defamation League, among other organizations.

   He is survived by his former wife June (nee Kozak) Kane of Milwaukee; sons Joshua (Erin) Kane and Seth Kane; and brother Robert Kane.

   The funeral and burial were on Long Island, N.Y.

   The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the ALS Association.

 
Barbara Young

   Barbara Young, nee Shullman, of Mequon died June 3. She was 74.

   She was born in Altoona, Pa. She earned her undergraduate degree from Chatham College in 1963 and a Master of Arts degree at Cornell University in 1968. She came to Milwaukee from Ann Arbor, Mich., in 1974.

   She worked as a realtor for Shorewest Realtors in Mequon. She was a member of Congregation Shalom.

   She is survived by her husband, Stephen R. Young; children Jodi (Todd) Miller and Joel (Michelle) Young; and three grandchildren.

   Blane Goodman Funeral Service handled arrangements. Rabbi Ronald Shapiro officiated at the funeral on June 7. Burial was in Mound Zion Cemetery.

   The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Congregation Shalom.

 
Hyman Zimmerman

   Hyman Zimmerman of Pembroke Pines, Fla., died May 20. He was 88.

   He was born in Sheboygan, graduated from Sheboygan High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He worked as an adjudications director for the U.S. Veterans Administration.

   He was a member of Beth El Ner Tamid Synagogue in Milwaukee. He enjoyed theater, music, sports and directing the synagogue’s entertainment.

   He was predeceased by son Steven Zimmerman. He is survived by his wife, Ruth (nee Bensinger), son David (Marilyn) Zimmerman of New York City; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

   Goodman-Bensman Whitefish Bay Funeral Home handled arrangements. Rabbi Leonard Kravitz officiated at the graveside service on May 26 at Greenwood Cemetery.
