JCC film classes present culture of U.S. and Israel

The Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center will be offering free film classes in March.

The “Cutting Edge Israel” series, co-sponsored by the JCC and the Israel Center of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, presents short Israeli films, in Hebrew with subtitles, on select Thursday nights at 7 p.m.

“Inventing Our Life: The Kibbutz Experiment” (2010) on March 12 explores the 100-year-history of the kibbutz movement. Amit Yaniv-Zehavi, Israel emissary to Milwaukee, will lead discussion.

As part of the “Singular Sensations: Great Jewish Stars of Broadway” series, the JCC will show “Billy Crystal: 700 Sundays” (2014) on Sunday, March 22, 4 p.m. This film presents comedian Crystal’s autobiographical show, filmed at a live performance.

On Thursday, March 26, JCC Judaic educator Jody Hirsh will be leading discussion following the documentary film “Life in Stills” (2011), about a 96-year-old woman and her grown grandson who join forces to save her photography store in Israel. The store holds almost one million negatives that highlight Israeli history. This film won the Israeli film award for best documentary in 2012.
