The Jewish Museum Milwaukee will host events in January and early February linked to the exhibit “Stitching History from the Holocaust,” which runs through Feb. 28.
• “Global Jewish Communities on the Move — Part 2 of the ‘Immigration Series’” will be presented Tuesday, Jan. 13, 7 p.m.
This presentation will address how countries around the word, many with long established Jewish communities, are experiencing an exodus of those communities because of escalating anti-Semitic activity and sentiment.
Featured presenters will be Dr. Shay Pilnik, executive director of the Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center, and Elana Kahn-Oren, director of the Jewish Community Relations Council, both programs of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation.
This program is co-sponsored by HERC. This series is co-sponsored by the JCRC and the Comparative Ethnic Studies Program and History Department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. It was developed in collaboration with Rachel I. Buff, associate professor of history at UWM.
Per session cost is $5 for members, $10 for non-members.
• A documentary film, “Nicky’s Family,” will be shown and discussed on Sunday, Jan. 18, 1 p.m.
The film describes Sir Nicholas Winton, an English businessman, who rescued and brought to Great Britain some 670 Jewish children. One of them was Renata Laxova, who became a geneticist based in Madison. She will speak after the screening.
Cost is free for JMM members; $5 for non-members. RSVP deadline is Jan. 11.
• A “Memory Box Art Workshop” will be offered on Sunday, Feb. 1, 1:30 p.m.
Participants will be able to capture and preserve family history and memories through the creation of a keepsake memory box. Madison-based artist and educator Leora Saposnik (see page 11 in this issue) will lead the program. JMM will provide paper and recyclable shoe boxes for a decoupage treatment; participants should bring copies of photographs, letters, fabrics, buttons and found objects to decorate it.
Cost for individuals is $5 for members; $8 for non-members. Cost for families (up to 5 people) is $15 for members; $20 for non-members. RSVP deadline is Jan. 23.
• The third part of the “Immigration Series,” titled “Refugees of Many Lands,” will be offered on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 7 p.m.
