Green Burial Council certifies Greenwood

On July 10, Greenwood Cemetery became the first Wisconsin Jewish cemetery to be certified as an approved provider by the Green Burial Council, according to an email from John Pereles, president of the Greenwood Cemetery Association’s board of directors.

“We would like to welcome you as a new Approved Cemetery Provider of the Green Burial Council,” the notification states. “As the market for eco-friendly death care options continues to emerge, it is support from funeral providers like you that enable families to have choices. Thank you for your support in offering eco-friendly options to your community.”

The Chronicle’s May 2014 issue carried an article about how the cemetery has opened a section, called “Prairie Green,” in which to have “green burials” — burials that foster natural decomposition and employ environment protection practices.
