Jewish American Heritage Month

President George W. Bush proclaimed that May would be Jewish American Heritage Month in 2006. In 2010, JAHM became a tax-exempt organization. This year, the project pays special tribute to the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, which is celebrating its centennial in 2014 and is a partner agency of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation.

In addition, the project’s founding corporate sponsor, the Manischewitz Jewish food company, this year marked JAHM with displays printed on boxes of its matzah. The one shown here, created with the assistant of the Jewish Museum Milwaukee, focuses on some Wisconsin Jewish historical figures — magician Harry Houdini, who spent some of his childhood in Appleton; and Milwaukeeans Harry Soref, founder of Master Lock, and inventor George Bursak.
