The Hillel Foundation at the University of Wisconsin-Madison offers students an inclusive, pluralistic Jewish community.
The program offerings aim to provide an access point for all Jewish students: athletes, student leaders, artists and singers, as well as those seeking primarily a social experience.
Alanna Koritizinsky, senior, said, “Hillel has provided me with a lot of opportunities to discover myself through community service as well as Jewish life.”
Throughout the week, the Barbara Hochberg Center for Jewish Life is busy. Scores of students come to Hillel to eat a kosher meal with friends. Jewop, Hillel’s Jewish a cappella group, practices new songs, using the dining room piano.
On Thursdays, Hillel’s volunteer group, “Challah for Hunger,” bakes and braids challah rolls in the dining room to the tune of their favorite songs. Friday nights are specially reserved for Shabbat, with the soft sounds of singing wafting through all floors of the building.
In all of these ways and more, students learn about leadership, relationships, friendships, and identity as they move into adulthood as Jews. Graham Perner, senior, said, “I go to Hillel because it’s a chance to experience something similar to home. It’s also the chance to be able to socialize with other Jewish students. Hillel is a great place to meet and talk with them over a free dinner.”
UW Hillel is a big tent, open on all sides, and we provide Jewish programming to foster growth through religious, social, and leadership experiences.
