‘Denim Day’ seeks to raise awareness of sexual assault

On Wednesday, April 23, the Jewish community is partnering with Aurora Health Care on a “Denim Day” project to raise awareness of sexual assault and to support the Milwaukee organizations that treat survivors.

Organizers of this partnership at the Milwaukee Jewish Federation point out that “We can make an impact by committing participation of at least 360 people on Denim Day.”

Denim Dayisin honor of a woman who was raped by her driving instructor. The woman pressed charges, but the case was dismissed because the chief judge decided that, “…because the victim wore very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them, and by removing the jeans it was no longer rape, but consensual sex.”

All proceeds benefit The Sexual Assault Treatment Center (SATC) of Greater Milwaukee, Aurora’s S.A.N.E. (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) Program and The Healing Center.

For $5, participants receive a sticker giving them a “pass” to wear denim for a day at work. To order a sticker and for more information, go to MilwaukeeJewish.org/DenimDay.
