CJL supports Jewish education

The Coalition for Jewish Learning is the education department of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation.

“It’s also the best kept secret in the community given the number of people who benefit from CJL every year,” according to its director, Steven Baruch, Ph.D. “If your child has received any formal Jewish education in Milwaukee, he or she has likely benefited from CJL.”

The mission of CJL is to support high quality Jewish education throughout the greater Milwaukee area and within all streams of Jewish life.

One of its greatest areas of effect is on children who attend religious school through their congregations. CJL provides professional training, curriculum consultation, lessons plans and other resources to religious school teachers through its Congregational Schools Initiative. The services are provided at no cost to the teachers or the synagogues and teachers receive a stipend for their professional education.

“CJL has invested in me through free professional development programs,” said Jennifer Saber who teaches high school students at Congregation Sinai and Congregation Shalom. “This training along with CJL’s staff and online lesson plans helps me share my love for Judaism in a way that’s meaningful for high school students.”

Other major efforts of CJL include administering $500,000 in scholarship funds provided by the Helen Bader Foundation each year to help make Jewish day school education more affordable to Milwaukee families; conducting our community’s school census; providing education consultation and advocacy to educators, schools and congregations; and acknowledging local Jewish educators through its annual educator recognition event.
