The Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center will be offering free film classes in March.
As part of the “Children of Nazis: Coping with the Legacy of the Third Reich” series co-sponsored by the Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, the JCC will offer two classes.
The Australian drama “Lore” (2012), will be shown on Wednesday, March 12, 7 p.m. It is about a family of children wandering in post war Germany after their Nazi parents are arrested, who are helped by a boy with a Jewish passport.
The film is in German with subtitles. The instructor will be Dr. Peter Staudenmaier of Marquette University.
On Sunday, March 23, 4 p.m., the JCC will present “Hitler’s Children: Sons and Daughters of the Leaders of the Third Reich Talk about their Fathers and Themselves” (2011). Milwaukee psychiatrist Dr. Steven Moffic will lead discussion.
The “Cutting Edge Israel” series, co-sponsored by the JCC and the Israel Center of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, will present short Israeli films, in Hebrew with subtitles, on select Thursday nights from 7:30-9 p.m.
“Clementine” (2009) on March 6 explores family roots, linking personal stories of the director’s ancestors with the history of the Israeli state. Michal and Ro’ee Peled, co-directors of the Israel Center of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, will lead discussion.
On March 20, the documentary film “Women Unchained” (2009) probes the dilemma of agunot — women whose husbands refuse to give them Jewish divorces. Local Jewish educator Sherry Blumberg, Ph.D., will lead discussion.
On April 3, the documentary “Dancing Alfonso” (2007) will be featured. It focuses on a flamenco dance troupe in Tel Aviv where the average age of its members is over 75, and focuses on its lead dancer, Alfonso. Discussion will be led by Ro’ee and Michal Peled.
