The Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center and the Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center will be co-sponsoring a series of programs February-April on the topic “Children of Nazis: Coping with the Legacy of the Third Reich.”
The first program will be a discussion of the book “Children and Fire” by Ursula Hegi, led by Jody Hirsh, Judaic education director of the JCC, on Monday, Feb. 17, 3:30 p.m. This acclaimed book deals with the effects of Nazism on a teacher and her students.
Two free film classes will be presented in March, both dealing with children of Nazis. The German drama, “Lore,” will be shown on Wednesday, March 12, 7 p.m. Instructor will be Dr. Peter Staudenmaier from the German department of Marquette University.
The film follows a family of children whose Nazi parents were arrested after the war, as they make their way across Germany.
The documentary “Hitler’s Children: Sons and Daughters of the Leaders of the Third Reich Talk about Their Fathers and Themselves” will be shown on Sunday, March 23, 4 p.m. Milwaukee psychiatrist Dr. Steven Moffic will lead the discussion.
This documentary examines the children and grandchildren of high ranking Nazis and the effects their infamous relatives had on their lives.
On Sunday, April 6, 3 p.m., the HERC will present author Bernd Wollschlaeger who will speak about “A German Life – Against All Odds, Change is Possible.” The event is co-sponsored by the JCC.
