“Home” will be the overall theme of the 2014 “A Day of Discovery” on Sunday, Feb. 16, at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center, 6255 N. Santa Monica Blvd., Whitefish Bay.
“We thought ‘home’ was a big enough theme that can allow us to talk about how we’re alike and how we’re different,” said Mona Cohen, the JCC’s director of adult programs and community services.
“What ‘home’ means could be feeling at home, how we feel at home in the Jewish community, the home our grandparents created, Israel is my other home — it’s a general theme that allows people to take about their connections,” Cohen said.
The special feature of this year’s free event is a Community Storytelling Event led by Ex Fabula, a local organization committed to strengthening community bonds through the art of storytelling.
This group will both ask people to tell stories and hold two workshops for people interested in learning tips about how to tell stories, Cohen said. The event will feature members of Milwaukee’s Jewish community presenting five-minute personal stories.
In addition, this free program gives participants the opportunity to choose from a myriad of workshops with topics focusing on everything from the issues and challenges of today’s Jewish world to exploring history, music, culture and texts.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lunch is available with advance purchase.
“A Day of Discovery” is chaired by Susan Gray, and is sponsored by the Coalition for Jewish Learning, the education program of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation; the JCC; and the Milwaukee Jewish Day School.
