The Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center will be offering two free film classes in February.
On Sunday, Feb. 9, 4 p.m., the “Jews Around the World” series presents “Fill the Void” (“Lemale et ha’halal”), winner of seven Israeli film awards. In this drama, a young haredi Orthodox woman in Israel must decide whether to marry her newly widowed brother-in-law (with an infant) or seek a match of her own.
Discussion will be led by Dan Margolis, senior lecturer in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.The film is in Hebrew with subtitles, and is being co-sponsored by the Israel Center of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation.
In conjunction with a production at the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, “The Whipping Man”— a Civil War drama by Matthew Lopez involving a Jewish Confederate soldier running Feb. 5-March 16 — the JCC will show “Jewish Soldiers in Blue and Gray”at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27.
This documentary tells the hidden story of the Jewish soldiers who fought in the Civil War on both sides. The talkback will be led by Jody Hirsh, director of Judaic education at the JCC.
