Semon begins NCCC service

Sarah Semon of Mequon was one of four Wisconsinites who recently began 10-month terms of service in the National Civilian Community Corps, an AmeriCorps program.

Semon is based out of the AmeriCorps NCCC regional campus in Sacramento, Calif. The participants began their first projects during the week of Nov. 14.

Founded in 1994, AmeriCorps NCCC is a residential national service program that supports disaster relief, the environment, infrastructure improvement, energy conservation, and urban and rural development. Currently, about 80,000 people serve in AmeriCorps programs nationwide each year, about 2,500 of whom serve with AmeriCorps NCCC.

As a team leader, Semon is responsible for managing daily activities of 10 to 12 corps members on their service projects. Before joining the NCCC, she attended Nicolet High School and Reed College.

AmeriCorps NCCC members, all 18 to 24 years old, complete at least 1,700 hours of service during the 10-month program. In exchange for their service, they receive $5,550 to help pay for college.
