Israeli rabbinical court judge to speak

Rabbi Yosef Carmel, presiding judge of the Eretz Hemdah Rabbinical Court in Israel, will be speaking Sunday, Nov. 3, 3 p.m., at Lake Park Synagogue, 3207 N. Hackett Ave. in Milwaukee.

Carmel is a renowned scholar and sought after authority on Jewish law. He will speak about the court — why such a court is necessary in Israel, what it does and why it is important to use religious courts even for matters that are not intrinsically religious.

He will also speak about issues related to conversion, divorce and the difficulties of agunot, women unable to remarry because their husbands refuse to give them a get (Jewish law divorce document).
