Lubavitch of Wisconsin will present The Rohr Jewish Learning Institute’s newest course “Life in the Balance: Jewish Perspectives on Life Issues.”The classes will begin the week of Monday, Oct. 21, and run for six consecutive weeks.
They will be offered at several locations in the Milwaukee area: Chabad of Waukesha, Lubavitch House on Milwaukee’s East Side, The Shul Center in Bayside and The Peltz Center for Jewish Life in Mequon. Continuing education credits are available for medical professionals, lawyers, and dentists.
Participants will examine ethical questions and explore Jewish perspectives about topics ranging from preventative health measures to end of life issues and the appropriate respect due the body after death.
Issues explored will include: Must we prolong life at the expense of immense suffering? Should we legalize compensation for organs to save the lives of those on the transplant list? Where do we draw the line between keen vigilance to safeguard one’s health and pointless panic?
The course will also explore ethical ramifications of new technologies such as digital autopsies and uterine transplants.
The courseis designed to appeal to people at all levels of Jewish knowledge, including those without any prior experience or background in Jewish learning. It is open to the public, and attendees need not be affiliated with a particular synagogue, temple, or other house of worship.
