When she was 19, in 1965, runner Lorraine Lotzof Abramson won three gold medals at Israel’s Maccabi Games. But she was a member of the team from South Africa, and had to return to a country with officially racist policies.
She has since written an autobiography of her years there, “My Race: A Jewish Girl Growing Up Under Apartheid in South Africa” (2010, DBM Press).
“The Mosse/Weinstein Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison will be bringing her to Milwaukee to speak at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 7 p.m.
The event is co-sponsored by the Nathan & Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center of the Coalition for Jewish Learning, the education program of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation; the Jewish Museum Milwaukee, and the JCC.
