The board of the Riverwest Public House Cooperative on Aug. 26 voted to table a proposal to boycott Israel, according to a Facebook post the next day by Elana Kahn-Oren, director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation.
Kahn-Oren reported that the nine-member board also formed a committee to develop policies on requests to take positions or actions on political issues.
The Milwaukee Palestine Solidarity Coalition had approached the board to request that the co-op support an economic and cultural boycott of Israel; and the MPSC made a presentation to co-op members on July 31.
According to Kahn-Oren, of the about 35 people attending the July 31 meeting, about 15 were pro-Israel community members, who expressed opposition to the idea. Kahn-Oren also reported that “many members of our community wrote letters to the co-op.”
In addition, two anti-boycott people spoke at the Aug. 26 meeting, one a co-op member, the other a JCRC board member, Kahn-Oren wrote.
The co-op is located on Locust Street in Milwaukee.
