Jewish National Fund Wisconsin Region will host the Wisconsin Annual Tribute Banquet on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 5:30 p.m.
The banquet’s theme is “JNF: Your Voice in Israel.” According to the banquet co-chairs, Barbara and Al Simon, the focus of JNF fundraising this year is development of Israel’s Negev Desert region.
The event will honor 11 members of the Wisconsin Jewish community for their commitment to Jewish causes and their support of JNF’s work in developing the land of Israel. They are:
• Arlene z’l and Art Arnstein. Arlene worked in human resources for 24 years. Art spent the last 35 years in the scrap metal recycling industry, and with his partner, Steve Lewinsky, merged their business with Rick Mechanic to form United Milwaukee Scrap LLC.
Art has served several terms as vice president at Congregation Beth Israel, and is active in the Sherman Park Community Association.
Together, the couple has been longtime supporters of the Milwaukee Jewish Home and Care Center, Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, Keshet Muscular Dystrophy Association, Boy’s Club of Wisconsin, Ronald McDonald House and Mequon Jewish Preschool. They are members of several synagogues in the Milwaukee area.
• Sue and Allan Carneol. Sue, a pediatric speech-language pathologist, has worked in medical, educational, and clinical settings and currently has a private practice at the North Shore Center LLC in Mequon. Sue also teaches at UWM and is the editor of a quarterly newsletter for the Velo-Cardio-Facial Syndrome Educational Foundation.
She is involved in the Milwaukee Jewish Federation and Hadassah, along with serving as secretary of the board of trustees at Congregation Beth Israel Ner Tamid. Sue served on the board and chaired the fundraising committee for Milwaukee Jewish Day School.
Allan is a senior partner and certified public accountant with Zetley, Carneol, and Stein, S.C. He is a lifetime member of Hadassah and Congregation Beth Israel Ner Tamid, where he served on the board of trustees and many committees. He is the general chair for Israel Bonds in Wisconsin, currently chairs the summer camp scholarship committee and sits on the finance committee for the Milwaukee Jewish Federation.
• Nina and Richard Edelman. Nina is a past president of a NA’AMAT chapter, and founding librarian of 25 years at MJDS. Now retired, she is a full-time fiber artist creating contemporary art quilts, including Torah and Ark covers. Her Judaic work can be seen at Congregation Emanu-El, Congregation Shir Hadash, MJDS and Jewish Family Services at Deerbrook Crossing. Nina also enjoys freelance writing and traveling.
Richard graduated in philosophy and electrical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and later founded and became president of Essex Trading Company. After retirement, Richard became a metal sculptor. His work includes major installations at Chai Point, Congregations Shalom and Emanu-El and throughout Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward.
• Dr. Jessica and Rabbi Wes Kalmar. Rabbi Wes leads Anshe Sfard Kehillat Torah (ASKT) in Glendale. He has been active in creating and developing an innovative adult education program, teaching a wide range of Torah classes, revitalizing many of the shul’s committees and events and developing youth programming. He is a member of the rabbinic advisory committee of the Glendale Mikvah and on the boards of the MJF and Hillel Academy, and oversees the maintenance of the Glendale eruv.
Dr. Jessica will begin her position as an assistant professor in the psychology department at Lakeland College in August 2013. She teaches a popular “Women in the Bible” series at ASKT, and serves on the board of Jewish Beginnings Pre-School, facilitates the ASKT Ladies’ Rosh Chodesh Tehillim Group, co-chairs the ASKT Hospitality Committee, and helps to run the ASKT Women’s Rosh Chodesh Society.
• Rachel and Scott Steele. Rachel is the human resources manager for GE Healthcare’s U.S. legal and business development teams. Rachel has tutored bar and bat mitzvah students, and taught Torah and Haftorah trope to children for her synagogue, Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun, where she taught Hebrew school for three years.
Scott is an Emmy-nominated, award-winning television veteran with experience in most aspects of broadcasting. He completed the MJF Visions I and Visions II programs, was co-chair of the annual Super Sunday fundraiser, and twice led the training committee. After several successful on-air positions in consecutively larger markets and networks, Scott founded his own media company. The Steele family currently holds membership and affiliation with three synagogues.
• Ronen Monosov. Born in 1992 in Israel, he and his family moved to the United States in 2006. He attended Nicolet High School.
In the fall of 2010, he began his college career at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he witnessed a week-long anti-Israeli event organized by a campus-based group and was motivated to expand his involvement within the Jewish community beyond the on-campus Chabad.
With his leadership Alpha Epsilon Pi, a Jewish fraternity, was re-founded at UWM, as 15 students joined the first-formed class. Among other projects, the new fraternity worked towards uniting with Hillel to create activities on campus showcasing Israel’s contributions to advancements in various fields and providing objective information on the political situation in the Middle East. Recently Ronen was re-elected for a second term as AEPi president.
The evening will feature as guest speaker Myron Stayman, senior vice president of investments with Merrill Lynch.
He has appeared on Barron’s list of top 1,000 financial advisors in America. He has been active with Jewish federations in Dade and Broward counties, served on the board of Jewish Community Services of South Florida and is past president of Beth David Congregation.
Stayman is a member of JNF’s budget and finance committee, co-chair of the Israel relations committee, and a Negev Society and Century Council member.
The banquet will take place at the Harry and Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center, 6255 N. Santa Monica Blvd. Tickets are $70 per person, and the evening will be catered by Amy Firrante.
