73 Israelis working at Wisconsin Jewish camps

The Jewish Agency for Israel every summer sends Israeli emissaries to Jewish summer camps throughout the country. This year, it will send more than 1,200 — an increase of some 150 over last year, according to a JAFI news release.

This year, 73 of them are working in seven Jewish summer camps located in Wisconsin, according to an email from JAFI.

B’nai B’rith Beber Camp in Mukwonago has seven; Camp Chi in Lake Delton has six; Herzl Camp in Webster has two; the Steve and Shari Sadek Family Camp Interlaken of the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center has four; Camp Ramah in Wisconsin in Conover has 21; the Olin-Sang-Ruby Union Institute in Oconomowoc has 28; and Camp Young Judaea Midwest in Waupaca has five.

According to the JAFI release, the summer emissaries “are hand-picked, experienced Israeli youth leaders who have served in the Israel Defense Forces or National Service, and come to North America to share their excitement about Jewish life in Israel.”

At the camps, they “work as counselors, teachers, nature guides, theater directors, dance instructors, cooking instructors, arts and crafts teachers, song leaders and athletic coaches. Throughout the summer, these Agency emissaries also educate North American youth about modern Israeli culture and form a connection with campers and fellow staff that often leads to lifelong friendships and a strengthening of the global Jewish family.”
