As part of its scholar-in-residence program, Congregation Anshe Sfard Kehillat Torah will present a series of lectures on March 15-17 by Rabbi Nathaniel Helfgot.
Helfgot is a faculty member at Yeshivat Chovevei Torah Rabbinical School, where he chairs the Departments of Bible and Jewish Thought, teaches Talmud, and is director of continuing rabbinic education.
In addition, he is the spiritual leader of Congregation Netivot Shalom in Teaneck, N.J., and teaches at Maayanot Yeshiva High School for Girls, Drisha Institute for Jewish Education, Frisch School, Columbia University, and Yeshiva University.
The Friday night lecture, March 15, will follow a Shabbat dinner ($12 per adult) at the shul and will be entitled, “Halakhah and Ethics: What Do We Do When the Two Collide?”
Saturday morning during services, March 16, Helfgot will discuss “The Five Intellectual Legacies of Rav Soloveitchik.” Before Mincha services Saturday afternoon, the rabbi will speak about “Issues in Modern Orthodoxy” at the home of Shelley and Dan Weber (6811 N. Glen Shore Dr., Glendale). Between Mincha and Ma’ariv services at ASKT, Helfgot will discuss “P’shat and Drash: The Ashkenazic and Sephardic Experience.”
On Sunday morning, March 17, ASKT will host a special lecture on “Depression and Mental Illness in Our Community: A Personal Reflection and a Communal Charge.” The session will start at 9:30 a.m. with an optional light brunch ($5).
