Historian Sarna highlights 2013 Day of Discovery

Renowned historian of American Jewry Jonathan Sarna will highlight the 2013 Day of Discovery.

This day-long Jewish learning event is slated for Sunday, Feb. 17, at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center, 6255 N. Santa Monica Blvd.

Sarna is professor of American Jewish history at Brandeis University and the chief historian of the National Museum of American Jewish History.

He is author of “American Judaism: A History” (2004), winner of the National Jewish Book Award, and most recently the author of “When General Grant Expelled the Jews” (2012).

He will speak at 1 p.m., and lead a text study “Discovery Workshop” at 2:15 p.m.

Additional plans for the day include two sessions of “Learning Workshops” — at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. — in which participants may choose two from 20 offerings on a wide range of Jewish subjects taught by local authorities.

Topics include the state of modern Judaism, religious subjects like prayer and mysticism, cultural subjects like theater and music, political activism, Israel, and more.

The event will also take time between the Learning Workshops — at 10:15 a.m. — to recognize outstanding local Jewish educators.

Rabbi Yosef Aryeh Perlman of Yeshiva Elementary School will receive the 2012-13 Educator of the Year Award. Jennifer Saber of Congregation Shalom Religious School will receive the Gill Incentive for Teachers (GIFT) Award.

In addition, Anne Gleischman, Bunny Honigman, Lenny Kass, Linda Lubner, Marilyn Ruby, Dvorkie Shmotkin, Kathy Stange, Diane Wolfson, and Ann Yurkowitz will receive the Chai Award for 18 years of service; and Marilyn Kraar and Nadine Siegman will receive the Double Chai Award for 36 years of service.

Admission is free. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Lunch, served at noon, will be available for $10.50 each and must be pre-ordered by contacting Mona Cohen, 414-967-8249; or by mailing a check to Day of Discovery, 6255 N.
