The Public Broadcasting Service program “Great Performances” will present a documentary on “Broadway Musicals: A Jewish Legacy” on Tuesday, Jan. 1, and other times during the month.
The 90-minute film by Michael Kantor is narrated by Joel Grey. It explores the unique and dominant role of Jewish composers and lyricists in the creation of the modern American musical.
It includes discussion and footage of Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, George and Ira Gershwin, Lorenz Hart, Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein II, Kurt Weil, Sheldon Harnick, Jerry Bock, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, and many others.
