MJDS students send check to Direct Relief

Last year’s seventh grade class at the Milwaukee Jewish Day School on June 5 voted to send $22,000 to Direct Relief for medical aid to Haiti.

The organization received the check last month and announced it in a blog dated Nov. 2.

According to the blog post, “Direct Relief received a majority of votes tallied in an end-of-year competition … in which eight groups of students gave persuasive presentations advocating for a particular charitable organization to receive funding as part of the Voice of the Children project.” (See July 2012 Chronicle.)

The students raised the funds by selling Voice of the Children bracelets, holding bake sales, selling items online, and creating and posting videos online about poverty in Latin America. They also held a Day of Silence in which they received pledged amounts of money for each hour they did not speak. An individual donor matched the amount the students raised.

Direct Relief is a medical relief organization active in all 50 states and 70 countries. It was among the largest medical suppliers to Haiti in response to the 2010 earthquake.
