The renowned and award-winning modern klezmer band The Klezmatics will perform in the Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Sunday, Nov. 4, 6 p.m.
This concert is presented in collaboration with the UWM Year of the Arts, Peck School of the Arts, UWM’s Sam and Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies, and Hillel Milwaukee.
This six-member, New York-based ensemble, founded more than 25 years ago, is known for its fusion of traditional klezmer with 20th-century innovations (with elements of jazz and funk), for its understanding of Yiddish language and culture, and for its live performances.
It won a Grammy Award in 2006 for its recording “Wonder Wheel,” settings of Woody Guthrie lyrics. The band’s most recent recording is a two-CD set “The Klezmatics: Live at Town Hall.”
Tickets are $30 for adults, $15 for children age 12-18, $5 for children under 12, free for UWM students with ID. Tickets can be purchased online at arts.uwm.edu/tickets or by calling 414-229-4308.
In addition, members of the band will give a “Behind the Music” presentation, geared primarily to students and musicians, at Hillel Milwaukee, 2419 E. Kenwood Blvd., on Monday, Nov. 5, at 12:30 p.m. Call 414-961-2012 for more information.
