“Jews and Studio Photography in Britain and Beyond: Between Intimacy and Commercialism” is scheduled to be the topic of a talk by Michael Berkowitz, professor of modern Jewish history at University College London.
This event will take place on Thursday, Oct. 11, 7:30 p.m., at Congregation Beth Israel Ner Tamid, 6880 N. Green Bay Ave. It will be moderated by Lisa Silverman, assistant professor of history at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Berkowitz will explore the role of Jews in studio photography in Britain, where Jews pioneered commercial practices and new technology. Special focus will be on H. W. Barnett, who boosted his fortunes in London with well-publicized excursions to St Louis and Milwaukee.
This talk is offered in conjunction with UWM Sam and Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies’ “Roots and Restlessness” series and the UWM Year of the Arts, and is co-sponsored by the Jewish Museum Milwaukee.
