Registration for the 2013 Milwaukee Community Mission Trip to Israel opened on Sept. 1. The mission is scheduled for Feb. 21–March 2.
This mission, chaired by Rebecca Guralnick, aims to learn about Israel and Israeli society through an exploration of its cuisine. In addition, Rachel N. Baum, Ph.D., adjunct assistant professor of Jewish & Hebrew studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Sam & Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies, will participate as a scholar-in-residence, enhancing the trip with her expertise in Jewish culture.
The mission will begin with celebrations of Shabbat and Purim in Tel Aviv and will include a visit to Milwaukee’s Partnership2Gether region of the Sovev Kinneret. A journey to Ramat Negev to witness the blooming of the desert follows, and the trip will conclude with several days’ touring of Jerusalem.
Highlights of the trip will include: an architectural tour of the Bauhaus buildings in Tel Aviv; Ben-Gurion’s home and Heritage Museum; the Machneh Yehuda Market in Jerusalem; the Western Wall and tunnels; a meeting with members of Ayalim; winery tours; and a meeting with leaders of the Tav Chevrati (“cuisine with a conscience”) program which encourages ethical and sustainability-oriented practices among restaurants and their customer-consumer base.
Anyone interested in learning more about the trip or in registering may contact Ro’ee Peled at roeep@milwaukeejewish.org or 414-390-5705, and to attend an informational meeting on Monday, Sept. 10, 7 p.m., at the shlichut residence; call for the address and more information.
