‘Exploring Jewish Voices’ series begins with ‘A Thousand Clowns’

The first of three Milwaukee Chamber Theatre productions in the 2012-2013 season’s “Exploring Jewish Voices” series will be Herb Gardner’s 1960s comedy “A Thousand Clowns.”

It will run Aug. 9-26, at the Broadway Theatre Center, 158 N. Broadway, in Milwaukee’s Third Ward.

The play tells the story of Murray Burns, who believes in living life fully, even if that means going to the movies instead of looking for a job — which makes him a questionable role model raising his young nephew.

“Jewish Community Ticket Day” for this production will be Sunday, Aug. 12, 2 p.m., with the performance followed by a talkback with Jody Hirsh, Jewish educator at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center.

A “ViewPoints” lecture on the play will be offered on Wednesday, Aug. 15, 6:30 p.m., in the Skylight Bar & Bistro on the second floor of the Broadway Theatre Center, featuring Milwaukee Jewish community member Jerry Benjamin.

“Exploring Jewish Voices” is presented through a partnership of the JCC, Jewish Museum Milwaukee, and the Milwaukee Chamber Theatre. The series features plays by prominent Jewish playwrights, each addressing the theme “Rebels: Pushing Against the Boundaries.”

A 25 percent discount is available to the Jewish community for tickets to “A Thousand Clowns,” good for “Jewish Community Ticket Day” or any performance in the run.
