Former Milwaukeean Laura Paler received her doctorate in political science at Columbia University last month.
In July, she will become an assistant professor in the political science department of the University of Pittsburgh (on leave) and a post-doctoral fellow at the Center for Global Development in Washington, D.C.
She specializes in comparative politics and the political economy of developing countries. She holds degrees from The George Washington University and Oxford University; has worked for the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs; and has done research and democracy assistance work in Indonesia, China, and Cambodia.
Jackson Rickun, a senior at Nicolet High School, is the recipient of the HAMP Foundation scholarship. This awards full tuition, room and board, books, and fees at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for four years.
According to a release from Nicolet, the HAMP Foundation receive more than 100 applications, and all the applicants were in the top 20 percent of their graduating classes.
The release further states that at Nicolet Rickun was active in theater, participated in the Friendship Circle program, was a four-year member of Nicolet’s student council, and was one of the editors of the yearbook.
According to a website, the HEMP Foundation since 2006 has offered annually two full, four-year scholarship to UW-Madison or the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities to students enrolled in Milwaukee County high schools.
Elliana Sinykin, a freshman at Nicolet High School, was selected a national finalist at the state National History Day competition in Madison on May 5.
She was picked in the Senior Individual Documentaries division for her documentary “Triangle Fire” on the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in New York City in 1911.
Sinykin next will go to the national competition June 10-14 at the University of Maryland-College Park.
At the same event, Nicolet student Rebecca Lubar received a third honorable mention in the category Senior Individual Exhibits for her exhibit “Lizzie Kander: Cooking Up a Better Future” about Milwaukee Jewish activist Elizabeth Kander and her “Settlement Cook Book.”
