“Love at the Zero Hour: Jewish War Brides in World War II” will be the topic of the Faye Sigman “Woman of Valor” Lecture to be held Tuesday, May 22 at 7 p.m. in the Golda Meir Library Conference Center at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Robin Judd, associate professor of history at Ohio State University, will speak about Jewish women Holocaust survivors in post-war Europe who married U.S. military personnel, and the many challenges these couples faced.
The event is the last in this year’s series “Roots & Restlessness: Jewish Lives at Home and Abroad,” sponsored by the Sam and Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies at UWM.
In connection with the lecture, the Coalition for Jewish Learning (the education program of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation), the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center, and the UWM Center for Jewish Studies will host a free film class on Monday, May 14, 7 p.m., at the JCC.
“Bride Flight” (2008) is a romantic drama about three young war brides from different backgrounds who meet on a flight as they emigrate from Holland to New Zealand after World War II. The instructor will be Sherry Blumberg, Ph.D.
In addition, the lecture is one of the events associated with the Jewish Museum Milwaukee exhibit, “Mazel Tov! A Celebration of Jewish Weddings,” which opens May 13.
