Staged reading of Yiddish play translation slated

The Vanity Theater Company will present two staged readings of the play “After the Desert God” by Yiddish poet Kadya Molodowsky in a translation by Joel Berkowitz, director of the Sam & Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

The events will take place on Sunday, May 6, 3 p.m., at the Music Building at UWM; and Tuesday, May 8, 7 p.m., in the Ritz Theater of the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center.

Molodowsky (1894-1975) was born in Poland and came to the U.S. in 1935. She wrote “After the Desert God” shortly after the Holocaust. It tells the story of Dona Gracia Mendes Nasi (1510-1569), Jewish community leader and philanthropist, who also struggled with how to rebuild after a communal catastrophe.
