The Women’s Division of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation will celebrate the achievements of the past year and look toward the future at its 2012 Annual Meeting.
The event is scheduled for Tuesday, May 1, 11:30 a.m., at Congregation Beth Israel, 6880 N. Green Bay Ave.
The event’s theme is “Celebrating women who ignite change … bring your spark!” Featured speaker will be Gail Norry, chair of National Women’s Philanthropy for the Jewish Federations of North America.
Norry is a member of the board of trustees at the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, where she serves as co-chair of the Center for Jewish Life and Learning and is a past president of Women’s Philanthropy.
The cost of the event is $36. Reservations can be made online at www.milwaukeejewish.org or by calling 414-390-5700.
In addition to Norry’s keynote speech, the meeting will recognize volunteers for the Women’s Campaign, elect leaders, and honor President Susan Angel Miller and Women’s Campaign co-chairs Joan Lubar and Andrea Schneider, who will be completing their terms of office.
“During the past few years, my focus has been educating women about the Federation’s role in building community, creating an environment where genuine conversation can take place, and nurturing the spark of generosity and leadership in each of us,” said Miller. “I’m hopeful that, with everyone’s help, this focus of outreach and inclusivity will continue well into the future.”
Miller will be succeeded as president by outgoing Women’s Campaign co-chair Schneider. She will use her experience as a longtime MJF volunteer, as well as her current work on the Transition Team of the MJF Reimagining process, to prepare her to bring the Federation’s mission forward.
“To be on the Transition Team has been motivating and exciting, because I can see changes being implemented,” said Schneider. “I’m excited to combine my work with the Transition Team and Women’s Division to move the Federation and Women’s Division forward.”
Dr. Sharyl Paley, new Women’s Campaign chair, also sees the Reimagining project as an inspiration for her coming term.
“I am excited to serve as Women’s Campaign chair during a time of change. We live in a diverse and dynamic community whose ultimate shared goal is to be strong and vibrant, to thrive and support its members. Being a part of this movement of change drives me to help the Women’s Campaign evolve and succeed,” said Paley.
Outgoing co-chair Lubar will use her campaign leadership experience in her new role as a board member of National Women’s Philanthropy of the Jewish Federations of North America.
“I believe that women are the drivers of philanthropy in their households and the women that I have been privileged to work with over the past two years are hard working, purposeful, and energizing,” said Lubar. “I’m thrilled to become a member of the National Women’s Philanthropy Board because it’s a great opportunity to continue to serve my Jewish community and meet some very committed and inspiring women, while representing Milwaukee nationally.”
In addition to the Annual Meeting, coming events sponsored by the Women’s Division include a two-part session mini-series of its popular Edie Adelman Political Awareness.
The first session will take place on Monday, April 23, 9:30 a.m., at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center, 6255 N. Santa Monica Blvd.
It will feature guest speaker Moty Cristal, an Israeli negotiation expert, who will discuss, “Israeli Negotiation Strategies: from Egypt and Jordan to Hamas and Iran.”
This series is co-sponsored by the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation. Information about May’s session will appear in the May Chronicle.
Suggested donation for attending each session is $10. To RSVP, contact John Grochowski, 414-390-5781 or johng@milwaukeejewish.org.
Another exciting event will take place in September. The International Lion of Judah Conference will celebrate its 40th anniversary in New York’s Times Square.
It will feature many speakers, including Kathy Manning, chair of JFNA’s board of trustees, and Lion of Judah co-founder Norma Kipnis-Wilson. To see a sneak preview of the event, visit www.jewishfederations.org/ilojc.
