Kristallnacht remembrance slated

The Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center will host a commemoration of the 73rd anniversary of Kristallnacht on Sunday, Nov. 6, 1:30 p.m.

The commemoration will begin with a ceremony at the outdoor Memorial to the Holocaust located at 1360 N. Prospect Ave. Clergy representing different faith communities in the area will lead participants to the Rubenstein Pavilion in the Jewish Home and Care Center, 1414 N. Prospect Ave., where an interfaith candle lighting, commemoration service, and program will take place. Individuals from all religious backgrounds are invited.

Milwaukeeans Marvin Tick and Edith Shafer will present a program “Kristallnacht: Living Legacies of Germany,” telling the experiences of their families during and after Kristallnacht beginning in 1938.

Kristallnacht, also known as the “Night of Broken Glass,” was a massive anti-Jewish riot that occurred Nov. 9-10, 1938, throughout Nazi Germany and Austria. It was a pivotal event in the escalating violence toward the Jews culminating in the Holocaust.

This program is co-sponsored by the Jewish Museum Milwaukee and the Jewish Home and Care Center. Co-chairs of the event are Rachel N. Baum, Ph.D., adjunct assistant professor of Jewish studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Richard Lux, Ph.D., professor emeritus at Sacred Heart School of Theology.

The Holocaust Education Resource Center is a program of the Coalition for Jewish Learning, the education program of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation.
