Ex-Milwaukeean Deutsch to lecture on Pale of Settlement

Former Milwaukeean Nathaniel Deutsch, co-director of Jewish studies and professor of literature and history at the University of California Santa Cruz, will give the second in this year’s Jewish Heritage Lecture Series at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

He is scheduled to speak on Monday, Oct. 24, 4 p.m., on “Exploring the Jewish Dark Continent: Life, Death, and Ethnography in the Pale of Settlement.”

The “Pale of Settlement” was the area of Poland and Russia to which Jews were confined from 1791 to 1917.

The lecture will take place in Union South, 1308 W. Dayton St. Admission is free.
