Sarna inaugurates Madison lectures

Renowned historian of American Jewry Jonathan Sarna of Brandeis University will present the first of this academic year’s Jewish Heritage Lectures sponsored by the Mosse-Weinstein Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

In keeping with this year being the sesquicentennial of the start of the Civil War, Sarna will speak on “That Obnoxious Order: Ulysses S. Grant and the Jews,” discussing General Grant’s anti-Semitic General Order No. 11 and its aftermath.

The lecture will take place on Monday, Sept. 26, 4 p.m., at Union South, 1308 W. Dayton St. It is made possible by a grant from Sandra and Stanley Kutler. Admission is free. For more information, contact the Center for Jewish Studies, 608-265-4763, or visit http://jewishstudies.wisc.edu
