An introductory meeting of a Milwaukee Jewish Artists Lab is scheduled to take place on Monday, Sept. 12, 7 p.m., at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center.
This project, according to an announcement, is intended to bring together local artists in all media to “study together traditional Jewish as well as modern non-religious texts and art, share with each other what it means to be a Jewish artist, and/or an artist who is Jewish, and create work relating to a central Jewish theme.”
This project is also intended to be part of a Regional Artists Laboratory of the Upper Midwest. This is a collaboration between the Milwaukee JCC, the Sabes Jewish Community Center of Minneapolis, and the Hillel Foundation University of Wisconsin in Madison.
According to a release, this endeavor intends to address “the need to broaden the impact of the arts in helping Jewish artists as well as Jews in the regional Jewish community at large to find meaning, community, identity, and spirituality through the arts. For many Jews, the traditional approaches to Jewish life are no longer meaningful, and the arts can serve as a common denominator among Jews regardless of their degree of belief, cultural literacy, or religious affiliation.”
