Stuart E. Eizenstat’s opinion article in the July Chronicle (“Obama’s path will lead to a secure Israel”) contains many inaccurate and misleading statements.
Eizenstat states that 57 percent of Israelis “accept Obama’s principles.” But the Maariv poll (see the May 25 Bibi Report website) really says that 10 percent of Israelis believe Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “should have declared support” for Obama’s remarks “with no reservations,” and 47 percent said he should have done so “with reservations.” That is very different from acceptance.
This is an example of the way a lot of statistics get manipulated and are used to say things that are not true. Besides, Maariv frequently writes disparaging Netanyahu, and it is a biased paper that does not reveal how unscientific is its polling format.
Moreover, President Obama and his plans for what is good for Israel would never be accepted for this country by any responsible president (nor by most American citizens) if U.S. security issues were identical.
American voters must recognize that intellect alone does not make us necessarily honest, knowledgeable or even authoritative.
I have no Christian acquaintances that advocate Jewish surrender of its hinterland. Do you?
