Michael H. Blumenfeld, executive director of the Wisconsin Jewish Conference, was one of four leaders of Wisconsin interfaith groups that signed a letter dated May 24 about pending legislation to permit concealed carry of firearms in the state.
The letter asks the state legislature to ban concealed weapons from places of worship.
Joining Blumenfeld were: Scott Anderson, executive director of the Wisconsin Council of Churches; John Huebscher, executive director of the Wisconsin Catholic Conference; and Amy Johnson, executive director of the Lutheran Office for Public Policy in Wisconsin.
“Though we represent different faith traditions, we hold in common the conviction that our places of worship are islands of peace in a troubled world,” the letter states.
“Indeed, the very presence of concealed weapons would help to undercut one of the primary objectives of religious institutions, namely the fostering of peaceful relations among people of all backgrounds,” the letter continues. “Preventing weapons in our houses of faith is one way we give witness to our commitment to non-violent coexistence.”
The Wisconsin senate’s judiciary committee on May 25 approved by a vote of 3-2 a measure that would allow state citizens to carry concealed weapons without permits or training, according to a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel report.
