Milwaukee to mark Israeli holidays

The Milwaukee Jewish community will mark Israel’s Day of Remembrance (Yom HaZikaron) and celebrate its Independence Day (Yom HaAtzmaut) with events on May 8 and 15.

The events are sponsored by the Israel Center of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation and the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center.

On May 8, “A Day of Remembrance” will be held at the JCC. Yom HaZikaron is Israel’s Memorial Day in honor of its fallen soldiers and victims of terror. This year’s ceremony will focus on honoring those who serve behind the scenes in Israel’s Intelligence Community. (See information below.)

The event will begin at 3 p.m. with a talk by former Mossad agent Moshe Ben-David. Ben-David served some years ago as emissary from Israel to Milwaukee.

On May 2 at 7 p.m., a free screening of the Israeli film “The Debt”(2007) at the JCC will introduce the Mossad with a story of three young agents in search of a Nazi war criminal.

On May 15, an Israel Independence Day celebration will be held at the JCC. This will begin with a Walk for Israel at 2:30 p.m., as hundreds of supporters walk a short route on the North Shore, beginning at the east side of the JCC building.

The festivities will continue with a variety of family activities from 4-7 p.m., at the JCC, including a 4 p.m. concert with the Israeli group “The Peatot” followed by ethnic foods, a photo exhibit of organized trips to Israel by local groups, and activities for the whole family.

The above events are known together as Yamim (“Days”). Yamim chair is Yonatan Zvi, co-chair is Joe Devorkin, and honorary chair is Adina Altshull.

All events are free and open to the community. Additional information is available at www.milwaukeejewish.org or by calling 414-390-5700.

Behind the scenes stands Israel’s intelligence community

The Israeli Intelligence Community is the designation given to the organizations responsible for intelligence collection, dissemination, and research for the State of Israel. There are three major organizations:

Aman is the supreme military intelligence branch of the Israeli Defense Forces. Its jurisdiction consists primarily of “military intelligence,” alerting political leaders and the security arms to the possibility of war and estimating the means of the enemy, and identifying prospective targets during a war or a limited military conflict.

Mossad is the agency responsible primarily for overseas intelligence work. It is charged with, in addition to foiling attacks, a strategic-political emphasis, which includes evaluating the stability of regimes, and engaging in industrial-scientific-technological and nuclear -related intelligence as well as against global terrorism. Mossad is also responsible for bringing Jews to Israel from countries where official aliyah (emigration) agencies are forbidden, and for protecting Jewish communities worldwide.

Shin Bet (“Shabak”) is the organization responsible for internal security, including in the Israeli-administered territories. It is tasked with the security of the state, its citizens, and organs, against Palestinian and other forms of terrorism, and against internal subversion. They are also responsible for personal protection of senior public officials, securing important infrastructure and government buildings, and safeguarding Israeli airlines and overseas embassies.
