Community study ends first phase

The 2011 Milwaukee Jewish Community Study, the first such study conducted of the Milwaukee Jewish community since 1996, is nearing the end of its first phase, consisting of randomized telephone surveys.

An online survey component is now available, and all members of the Milwaukee Jewish community are encouraged to participate. Interested persons are asked to visit www.milwaukeejewish.org.

In addition, special computer kiosks are available at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center.

The study is being coordinated through the Center for Urban Initiatives and Research at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Stephen L. Percy, Ph.D., acting dean of the School of Public Health, director of the CUIR, and professor of political science and urban studies at UWM, is project coordinator.

In addition, the CUIR is providing a part-time research intern to help with comparison to past local studies as well as recent studies conducted in other communities.

The goal is to learn more about the size of the Milwaukee area Jewish community today, the demographics of the population, and the basic needs for services.

While the Milwaukee Jewish Federation has convened the study, its agency and synagogue partners in the Milwaukee Jewish community have played a key role in determining information needed to guide planning now and into the future.

In addition, study results will be shared during the summer, so that partner organizations can use them to help focus their efforts and financial resources with maximum effectiveness.

The study is being spearheaded through the Milwaukee Jewish Federation. Project co-chairs are Mike Lappin and Marlene Lauwasser.

The study is made possible by grants from the Helen Bader Foundation and the Daniel M. Soref Charitable Trust.
