Letter: Urges ‘yes’ vote on referendum

We are writing to urge Chronicle readers residing in the Nicolet High School District to vote in favor of the referendum for the school to be decided this coming April 5.

In a period of vituperative public discourse, ensuring Nicolet’s future as a viable, excellent institution is something people of all creeds, persuasions, and ages can support.

Any question as to the efficiency and competency of the professionals who manage Nicolet and teach there was put to rest after the flood this fall. A disaster that could have impaired the school year and ruined the institution physically turned into an occasion for ultra-quick recovery, renewal, and success.

Yet the organization has been stymied in recent years by a nasty combination of declining enrollment, high fixed costs, and recession. The school board has reduced the tax rate, but has had to lay off large numbers of staff and cut important curriculum and programs. It will get much worse if this referendum does not pass.

Subject to vagaries of the state budget, the property tax effect of the referendum to the owner of a $500,000 home will be around $11.40 per month. The impact of impaired educational quality to property values would be much more significant.

The Nicolet we and our children have known is something to be proud of, something consistent with Jewish values of learning and public good. Please protect those values by voting yes on April 5.
