Rabbi to speak on Jews, Christians living with the Bible

“Approaches to our Sacred Text: Jews and Christians Living with the Bible” will be the topic of the inaugural public event of the Lux Center for Catholic-Jewish Studies at Sacred Heart School of Theology on Sunday, March 6.

Speaking will be Rabbi Ruth Langer, Ph.D., of Boston College. The lecture, hosted by Sacred Heart, 7225 S. Highway 100, in Franklin, Wis., will be at 2:30 p.m.

Langer earned her doctorate in Jewish liturgy in 1994 and her rabbinic ordination in 1986 from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati. She is a graduate of Bryn Mawr College and a native of Pittsburgh.%u2028

Her book, “To Worship God Properly: Tensions between Liturgical Custom and Halakhah in Judaism,” examines the interplay between liturgical law and custom in the medieval world. She also co-edited “Liturgy in the Life of the Synagogue,” and has published many articles.

As associate director of Boston College’s Center for Christian-Jewish Learning, Langer has also been teaching, writing, and speaking about Jewish-Christian relations.

%u2028The Lux Center for Catholic-Jewish Studies was established in 2010 as a tribute to Professor Richard Lux, Ph.D., on the occasion of his retirement after 37 years on the Sacred Heart faculty. Its purpose is to establish a legacy that will continue his life’s work in strengthening Catholic-Jewish relations.
